Both women and men should be treated equally.

Women are stereotyped as loving and nurturing since they were the ones to give birth and stay home taking care of the children, the home and the bills while the men earned the money that supported the family. Women entered the workforce but were not paid as much as men, and they still do not make as much as a man even when working the same job as a man and women are often faced with the “glass ceiling” in certain positions which means that they cannot go any higher in their position. Background Of Gender Inequality and Stereotypes

Negative effects of gender inequality and stereotypes have been experienced in many areas of the world. The social problem has the effect of making women lesser members of society while empowering men. As a result, women are exposed to various challenges such as low pays and lack of promotions within the workplaces, denial of economic opportunities which in turn hinder their economic growth, denial of employment opportunities, violence, rape, sexual harassments among other practices which make the lives of the female gender difficult. Such issues have been experienced in the past, and various strategies adopted to solve the problem. Success has been achieved to some extent, but there is still the need to resolve the issue further and eliminate it (Levanon & Grusky, 2016).

Solving gender inequalities and stereotypes

It is evident that gender inequalities and stereotypes exists. In the process of addressing this social issue, I am proposing the use of two solutions, which are sociological perspective and Education. The sociological perspective is based on the fact that gender inequality is promoted by complex cultural and structural factors, which have got a basis on the social life of people. Since the 1970s, various attempts have been made to reduce the issue of gender inequality, and there are still chances to reduce the issue further. Socialization is the leading factor behind gender inequality, given that children are socialized immediately after birth into traditional notions relating to masculinity and femininity (Lindsey, 2015).  Such notions have got the effect of promoting gender inequality and stereotyping among the children as they grow. The traditions teach the children that there are careers that are made for men and those made for the women. Again, they develop the perception that men and women are not the same. Traditionally, men are considered superior to women, and such an idea is transferred to the children, hence promoting gender inequity and stereotype. Structural issues have also continued promoting gender inequality and stereotyping within workplaces. 

Based on the sociological perspective, the following principles and policies. First, parents and other adults should reduce socializing boys and girls into traditional gender roles, as that forms the basis for inequality and stereotyping. Secondly, there is a need to campaign against gender stereotyping and inequality. Popular media including television, books, newspapers, social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, etc. should be used to create public awareness about the negative effects of gender inequality and stereotypes, hence making them abstain from such practices. The campaigns should be against adverse social practices such as rape, pornography, sexual harassment, etc. Third, new laws and regulations against gender inequality should be passed, as well as reviewing and strengthening the existing ones. The laws and regulations should make it illegal for people to be denied employment opportunities, or sexually abused based on their gender. Fourth, the government should chip in, and provide high-quality care for mothers and girls who have been discriminated by the community. The government should look for effective ways of reinstating the segregated individuals within the community, and make them access equal opportunities like the others (Bartlett et al., 2016). Lastly, there is a need to increase mentorship program, aiming at promoting equality among men and women, and making opportunities available to all people, irrespective of their gender.

The other method to be considered is education. The education system has been used as the avenue for promoting gender inequality and stereotypes, and the female gender ends up suffering at the end (Robertson, 2016).  Traditional ideas have been shifted in the education system, where boys and girls choose subjects based on traditional roles. In such a process, girls end up promoting their discrimination and segregation within the community, as they settle on lesser subjects. They lack the courage of participating in subjects that are termed as difficult, and which have got the potential of leading them to better careers and economic growth. Teachers, parents, and counselors should play their roles in the education system. They have got the responsibility of directing boys and girls in the process of selecting subjects to take. Through the provision of the necessary information and guidance, the chances are high that gender inequality and stereotypes will be eliminated (Winslow & Davis, 2016).

Conclusion

In conclusion, gender inequality and stereotypes can be eliminated. This is not the first time the world is being faced by this social issue. The problem has been there since the times of immemorial. Actions directed towards eliminating the issue and have yielded positive results considering that there has been an immense decrease in the rate. However, gender inequality and stereotypes are still existing, and negative consequences faced, raising the need for possible solutions. In the process of addressing the issue, the focus should be based on the key factors promoting the inequality and stereotypes, and that’s the reason as to why I have proposed a sociological perspective and education. The two methods, although different, have got the benefit of equipping people with the necessary information relating to gender inequality, such as the causes, effects, and ways of solving the issue.
